The west hangar complex rehabilitation project is coming along! Paving in phases D and C is wrapping up, and demolition in phases E and B is underway. Pending no weather delays, phases E and B will take about 3 weeks to complete. In that time gate 10 will be shut down. Access to the west side of the airfield will be available through gate 6 by the terminal. Hangar tenants located to the south of phase B will have vehicle access through the single vehicle swing gate which has a combination lock on it. Tenants wishing to gain access through that gate can call Cooper Anderson at 970-397-8852 for the combination. Tenants in the south area will still be able to get aircraft in and out through a temporary aircraft gate. Please call airport administration ahead of time to use the gate. Again, we thank you for your patience and hope you enjoy the end result!
The West Hangar Rehabilitation Project will begin Monday July 18th, 2016 starting with phase D. The project will provide full depth removal of pavement and base material, and rehabilitated with new base material and pavement. The project is broken into five phases taking from 10 to 15 calendar days per phase. The final sixth phase will consist of painting the pavement markings, and will last only 2 calendar days. We hope that everyone will enjoy the new pavement once it is completed! We will be contacting affected hangar tenants ahead of each phase. Please call airport administration with any questions or concerns.
Next time you walk into the Terminal building at the Greeley-Weld County Airport, don’t forget to look up. As a tribute to Ed Beegles, we have recently installed a 1949 T8F Luscomb Observer airplane in the terminal lobby. Friends and family raised $50,000.00 to purchase, engineer and suspend this unique plane for a display. Originally designed to win a contract with ARMY, this high-wing tandem 85 hp liaison airplane was sold over the years to several people in Nebraska before it finally made its way to Julesburg, Colorado. Just after the airplane was traded to a pilot in Greeley, the plane was immediately impaled by a fence post pushing its engine through the instrument panel. The airplane then sat around the airport for 10-15 years until Ed purchased the wreckage for $300.00. Over several years, Ed reconstructed the aircraft and it once again took flight in 1983. The airframe now has over 1200 hours.
When the Luscomb was fully funded, Harris Aviation organized the suspension of the aircraft. The plane was brought into the terminal building in several pieces: Wings, fuselage and tail. Once inside, it was reconstructed and immediately suspended from the ceiling. On April 28th, 2012, there was a ceremony at the Greeley-Weld County Airport where friends and family could come and commemorate Ed Beegles and celebrate his life of accomplishments and passion for aviation. This event was catered by Kenny’s Steak House and was standing room only at some points. The outcome was certainly a reflection of the impact that Ed had on our community.
On May 21st EAA Chapter 1117 and Aims Community College will host the 2016 International Learn to Fly Day Event. Tickets for flights are sold on a first-come first-served basis and are limited in number so be sure to arrive early. There will be a bbq, static aircraft displays, a car show, and more.
